FAQ FOR The Dog Weight Pulling system

It is available to the public but we prefer to sell it through dog trainers.

That’s because they are accustomed to applying the principles of Distance, Duration & Distractions. 

This product is deceptively simple. Your average dog owner doesn’t understand the nuances of “conditioning” and has zero experience applying it.  Dog trainers are accustomed to conditioning equipment for dogs.  All dog trainers, regardless of style, approach new experiences in baby steps / small increments. 

Dogs love physical & psychological challenges! Have you ever seen the look on a bloodhound’s face after a day of scent tracking?  How about an old English sheepdog’s face after a day of herding sheep?  It’s the look of Fulfillment & Achievement.  There is a similar look on a dog’s face after Pulling Weight.  

For people, it’s similar to the feeling of going to a rock climbing gym. Dogs yearn to feel proud and a sense of fulfillment.

Grass or sand. While it’s durable enough for other surfaces, grass and sand extend the bag’s longevity.

Common fillers include gym weights, water bottles, or sandbags. Be creative with what you have on hand.

Remove the weights, then simply hose it down and let it dry in the sun.

Start with an empty bag and gradually increase weight over time. For maximum weight, consult your veterinarian, especially for dogs with specific health considerations.

When introduced properly, most dogs love it. I have only met a few dogs that do not love to drag weight.

The Dog Weight Pulling System must be introduced correctly in order to make a good association with it.  Moments can be imprinted on a dog forever which is why I recommend using it with a local dog trainer that you trust. You can also have the trainer call me.

This is not something that you want to slap on the dog and immediately start using.  That’s irresponsible and the fastest way to have your dog NOT LIKE IT.  

Utilizing baby steps to get your dog used to it is vital.  

Imagine if Bigfoot owned you and said “She is already a good human… Why would I buy her violin lessons?” Enrichment and dog training are two different things. Like learning a new skill, weight pulling is a fulfilling activity for many dogs. Many become eager to participate and even whine for the harness once they experience the joy it brings. Life enrichment for dogs is very important! 

Work rewards are extra high value rewards that your dog ONLY gets for pulling weight.  They must be yummy, novel & unique. Examples include Broiled Bison, Duck, Lamb,  A Lick Mat with a Special Recipe and more! Be creative! Don’t use the same boring treats that your dog gets for sitting in the kitchen.

End the session before your dog gets bored. This will build engagement for the next time your dog pulls weight. Your dog should still be in the mood to drag weight when you stop. It is critical to always end on a happy note.

When the dog is tired and smiling, end the session. Common dog sense also applies. Keep your dog hydrated and offer them potty breaks. Don’t pull weight during the hottest part of the day.

Yes, weight pulling is more mentally and physically challenging than a walk. However, it’s a supplement, not a replacement for walks. Weight pulling offers a unique sense of accomplishment for dogs.

No, weight pulling is distinct from leash walking. What you are doing is teaching your dog that there’s an appropriate time to pull.
